Metadata

This Metadata site is currently in development and will be updated as more information is included.

Metadata is information about the content, quality, condition, and other characteristics of information kept in a database. A map legend is an example of metadata. The legend contains information about the publisher of the map, the publication date, the type of map, a description of the map, spatial references, the map's scale and accuracy, and any other information that would describe how the map was made and how it should be interpreted. Metadata is software accessible, making it an essential part of the development of advanced database systems, such as a digital spatial library.

Topomaps on this site were created from 1991 aerial photography. They meet National Map Accuracy Standards (NMAS), at 1" = 100'. Coordinates are Virginia State Plane, South Zone.  North American Datum, NAD, of 1983. Vertical control is based on the Vertical Datum of 1929.

All other map products and GIS files are registered to the topomap files. Water and sewer, parcels, and zoning layers were created using rubber sheeting techniques. New development is added to these base maps using a global positioning system (GPS). Accuracy is not implied in any of our products and these should be used as reference only.
